Computerised navigation requires four components:
| Navigation Software | DigiBOAT Pty Ltd provides this for Windows users as Software-On-Board (SOB). SOB is free of charge for a 3 month (90 days) trial period, and thereafter reverting to a free LITE version or pay only USD60 for the Standard Licensed version, or USD185 for the Pro License. |
| Computerised Charts | C-Map Electronic Charts are the
industry leader and are fully compliant with SOB. SOB will read MAX and NT/NT+ C-Map charts: NTonPC, MAXonPC, or Cartridge (USBMM, USBCC, USBFP, PCMCIA) formats. |
| Computer | Any recent model laptop or desktop with at least 128Mb RAM, running Windows™ 2000 or newer operating system. (SOB will run with more limited capabilities on most Win98SE systems). |
| Positioning Device (GPS) | Almost any GPS manufactured since 1993 should work with SOB. The GPS must be NMEA 0183 compatible. Some older models may require data interface boxes which may no longer be available. Any GPS manufactured in the past 10 years is sure to be suitable, and apart from requiring a data cable (a standard accessory), will be pre-configured to work with little or no setup. Modern USB or Bluetooth connected GPS units are suitable for use with SOB. |

Sail the seven seas or cruise your favourite river or harbour with total confidence...
A GPS (satellite-based navigation device) pinpoints your precise position on the Earth's surface, SOB then locates the most appropriate chart from your digital chart portfolio according to the scale and displays it all in a seamless, clear and simple graphical manner on the computer screen.
Additional standard navigation instruments (NMEA-0183 compatible) are easily integrated:
Autopilot: with just a mouse click or two on the computer chart, SOB will control the ship's course by sending information to the autopilot, steering your vessel precisely to the route or destination waypoint as planned on the computer screen. With appropriate devices connected, the autopilot can also be used to steer your boat to a preset wind angle.
AIS Transponder/Receiver: now mandatory on all large commercial and passenger ships, the Universal Automatic Identification System uses VHF radio signals to transmit ship's information to all AIS enabled radio receivers in range (typically 20-40 miles). SOB "reads" this data and graphically displays the acquired targets directly on the chart screen. The received information includes: latitude/longitude, course, speed, ship size and type, destination and eta. Navigation aids are also increasingly being fitted with AIS devices to transmit their precise location.
RADAR: interfaces directly with the computer charts, allowing you to plot an unknown RADAR "blip" transmitted as an ARPA target directly onto the SOB computer chart screen. SOB calculates the other vessel's course and speed; and by extrapolation, can estimate its future position and all CPA data (Closest Point of Approach) and whether it poses a collision potential to your course. SOB will also redisplay the RADAR's cursor and VRM/EBL positions for compatible devices.
Wind Indicators: Predominantly for
sailors, quickly become an indispensable
source of information when linked to the SOB program. The wind indicator
and anemometer provides the computer with Apparent Wind strength direction. SOB
combines this information with your boat's course and speed to determine the
True Wind speed and direction.

MANUAL NAVIGATION
|
|
Electronic Compass & Speed LOG: Electronic compasses (gyros, fluxgate etc) if installed (often as part of an Autopilot installation) can be combined with manual speed pickup instruments (analogue LOG device) which, if NMEA enabled, will be used by SOB to calculate boat leeway, wind slippage and current "Set & Drift".
Echo (depth) Sounder: The onboard depth sounder can be integrated with the computer and SOB charting software to override the depths as indicated on the digital charts.
If your computer is short of COM (or Serial) ports for connecting NMEA instruments, the easiest solution is to buy a "multiplexer" (available from marine electronics shops, for a couple of hundred dollars, or check the specialist links on this page) which combines the wiring from all the NMEA instruments and sends their data on a single cable to a computer COM Port.
Extra COM Ports can also be formed from the USB connectors using a "Serial to USB Converter" (available from computer or electronics stores eg: Dick Smith Electronics for $60, or view our Shop Page for dual/quad converters)
Refer to our Online Manual for further information: http://www.digiboat.com.au/manual/man_technical.htm#connecting

SOB is freely distributed for a 3 month trial period. Thereafter, SOB will revert to a LITE version (with some advanced features restricted or disabled) unless a User License is purchased. The LITE version will still be suitable for basic navigation, however we obviously recommend you purchase the User License so you can continue to use SOB with all its features and benefits. The User License for standard, private SOB use is AUD60.00. It can be purchased on our Shop webpage.
You can freely use, copy and re-distribute the SOB program in either its "installed" or "installable" incarnations. Anyone you give SOB to should complete a Registration form so they can unlock SOB to make the most of the 3 month trial period. After which it will be their responsibility to License SOB for their continued use.
Registration is FREE and allows you to request up to 3 Unlock Codes that will fully enable SOB for the 3 month trial period (including extra tools, more routes and waypoints and targets etc).
Registered SOB users will be notified when updates and new versions become available.
Registered SOB users will receive free on-line tech support, and reduced price access to future upgrades and updates.
Registration is mandatory before C-MAP Charts can be purchased.
